Concussion Urgent Care and Walk-In Clinic in West Chester, PA
It’s estimated that more than 4 million Americans suffer from concussions annually, and the rate of concussions is increasing, particularly amongst our young, school-age athletes.
The Reality of Concussions and What To Expect When Diagnosed
Unfortunately, concussions are common. It’s estimated that more than 4 million Americans suffer from concussions annually, and the rate of concussions is increasing, particularly amongst our young, school-age athletes. Though they aren’t limited solely to athletics. Indeed, concussions can occur in everyone from any age group because of vehicular accidents, workplace injuries, or simple falls and accidents that lead to head injuries. These concussions occur because the head injury bruises the soft tissue of the brain, and they cannot be detected by MRIs or CAT scans, despite how severe they may be. If you’ve suffered a concussion, you must seek medical care immediately. If the first concussion isn’t cared for, and a second incident occurs, individuals can suffer brain swelling, permanent brain damage and possibly even death.
What You Should Expect When Diagnosed With A Concussion
After you suffer a fall or head injury, at AFC Urgent Care West Chester we’ll have you examined for a concussion by our esteemed ImPACT health providers. If we believe you may have suffered a concussion, we’ll provide careful instructions on how to safely allow your brain to rest. Following this, our ImPACT trained providers will ask you to visit us the next day, well rested and nourished, to complete our ImPACT assessment. Our test is administered on a computer and focuses on seven areas, taking exactly 30 minutes to finish. Our medical team’s test analyzes an array of cognitive skills utilized to diagnose the location and severity of your injury. The test includes:
- Word Memory- Your ability to recall a list of words in the proper sequence.
- Design Memory- The capability to callback precise details of various designs.
- X’s and O’s- An examination of both memory and speed.
- Symbol Search- In this test, you are shown nine numbered shapes and required to pair the blank shapes to their numerical partners.
- Color Word Match- This assessment displays the words “Red,” “Green,” or “Blue” and examine your ability in pairing the word with actual color.
- Three Letters- This exam analyzes how you recall information after accomplishing a task as efficiently as you can.
In the final part of the assessment, you will be asked to recall the word list from your first memory test and the design memory portion. Naturally, you can understand why a good night’s rest is needed for this test!
After 24 hours, our certified ImPACT specialist will receive and review your results with you, your family, your primary care provider and athletic coach, if you’d like. From there, we will craft a tailor-made care plan to help you return to school, sports, exercise, and work quickly and safely.
